Germany has approved the largest military budget since the Cold War: how much money will Ukraine receive?
German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil announced that the federal government has approved the draft budget for 2025, which includes a record amount of military aid to Ukraine — 8.3 billion euros.
This is reported by Ukrinform .
According to the minister, even three years after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the threat to European peace remains. Therefore, Berlin has no intention of reducing its support for Kyiv – on the contrary, it remains “at a strategically high level.”
“We stand firmly on the side of Ukraine. Our budget demonstrates unwavering solidarity in the fight for freedom and against Russian aggression,” Klingbeil emphasized.
In addition to helping Ukraine, Germany is strengthening its own defense capabilities – the defense budget will increase to 62.4 billion euros this year, and security spending will reach 2.4% of GDP. By 2029, Germany plans to reach a level of 3.5% of defense spending from GDP, which is the highest figure in recent decades.
In addition, it is planned to create an additional 10,000 positions in the Bundeswehr, as well as modernize security tools, including countering hybrid threats: cyberattacks, espionage, drones, and sabotage.
“We can no longer afford to lag behind. Our political task is to protect the country and our allies. To do this, we must not just invest, but act effectively and quickly,” the minister noted.
The final adoption of the budget will take place after a vote in the Bundestag.
Previously, the Netherlands announced a new financial support package for Ukraine totaling about 175 million euros, which will be an addition to existing contracts.
Recall that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine has concluded a long-term agreement with Germany for the supply of modern IRIS-T anti-aircraft missile systems.
The day before, during a joint press conference of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin, it was announced that a strategic agreement had been concluded in the field of the defense industry . The leaders of the two countries made several statements regarding a radical change in the format of military-technical cooperation between Ukraine and Germany.
