Germany increases military presence in Lithuania: what is known
Germany plans to significantly increase its military presence in Lithuania. By the end of 2027, Berlin will deploy a permanent brigade of almost five thousand soldiers there.
This was stated by Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas, Bild reports .
The new unit will be based near the border with Belarus and will be part of the reinforcement of NATO’s eastern flank.
According to Kaunas, preparations for the deployment of the brigade are proceeding even faster than planned. The construction of the military camp is almost ten months ahead of schedule. Housing, schools, kindergartens and medical facilities are being built for the military and their families.
The minister emphasized that this brigade will be fully equipped and ready to perform combat missions no later than the end of 2027. He also called its deployment an important step in cooperation between Lithuania and Germany.
There are currently about 1,800 German soldiers in Lithuania. They are participating in the Freedom Shield exercise at the Pabrade training ground, located about 20 kilometers from the Belarusian border.
As previously reported, Poland is introducing temporary restrictions on air traffic in the eastern part of the country along the borders with Belarus and Ukraine.
