The German government has announced plans to allocate €10 billion to strengthen civil protection and disaster relief systems by 2029.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated this in an interview with the Bild newspaper, as reported by Reuters.

“We are improving our civil protection system,” the official assured.

The government’s plans come amid growing geopolitical tensions, as well as threats from extremism, hybrid attacks, and disinformation campaigns.

Civil protection measures include linking sirens to a nationwide network, installing digital alert systems, building new shelters, and supplying 1,500 vehicles for fire departments, ambulances, mobile command centers, and heavy equipment.

The proposal also provides for disaster relief training involving the military, rescue services, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief, and humanitarian organizations.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the German government has been modernizing shelters. Currently, 579 facilities across the country can accommodate 480,000 people, some dating back to the Cold War.

Germany has previously stated that the state must be prepared for aggression from Russia within the next four years. Against the backdrop of a possible threat, plans are being developed to rapidly expand the network of bomb shelters.
