The European Union is discussing possible changes to the rules for temporary protection for Ukrainians who left due to the war. This includes restrictions for men of military age.
The countries’ positions were announced by the interior ministers before the EU Council meeting in Luxembourg on June 4, a Radio Liberty correspondent reports .
Germany, Sweden and Poland have said they are ready to support the idea of changes. This would mean that some men would no longer be subject to automatic temporary protection.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said that Berlin supports the continuation of protection, but under new conditions.
“There are various proposals for discussion, but we will move in a direction where the extension of the directive is possible, but under changed conditions,” he noted.
Swedish Migration Minister Johan Forssell said the country could also support such an approach. According to him, it is important that more men remain in Ukraine.
Poland also generally supports the idea of changes. At the same time, Warsaw opposed the proposal to take into account Ukraine’s “safe regions.”
European Commissioner for Home Affairs Magnus Brunner confirmed that among the options currently being discussed is the exclusion of men aged 23 to 60 from the temporary protection system.
At the same time, some countries, in particular Estonia and Luxembourg, advocate maintaining the current rules and automatically extending protection for Ukrainians.
In total, more than 4.3 million Ukrainians currently enjoy temporary protection in the EU. Most of them are in Germany and Poland.
As a reminder, consultations are ongoing in the European Union countries regarding the future fate of the temporary protection regime for Ukrainian refugees . No decisions have been made yet, and member states are only exchanging their proposals and visions.
