On Wednesday, August 13, the German government confirmed its intention to allocate $500 million to support NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which provides for the supply of American-made weapons to Ukraine.
The PURL initiative aims to quickly provide Ukraine with modern weapons systems, ammunition, and other key defense assets necessary to continue resisting Russian aggression.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed Berlin’s decision and emphasized that Germany remains the leader among European countries in terms of military assistance to Kyiv.
“This step once again demonstrates that Germany is a reliable partner in our common cause of supporting Ukraine. Berlin’s contribution will significantly accelerate the delivery of critical systems to the Ukrainian defense forces,” Rutte said.
The announcement coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s official visit to Berlin, where he held extensive talks with European leaders and U.S. officials. The consultations are seen as an important step in preparation for the upcoming summit in Alaska, where the U.S. and Russian presidents are scheduled to meet.
Previously, Ukraine and Germany discussed the current status of a number of defense contracts , in particular the conditions and timing of the arrival of Patriot air defense systems.
By the way, Germany agreed to provide Ukraine with two more Patriot air defense systems after reaching an agreement with the US on replacing the transferred equipment.
