Germany warns its citizens against traveling to Ukraine: for how long and why

The German Foreign Ministry has updated its travel advice for citizens to Ukraine. The German agency advises against travel to Ukraine and warns of possible increased Russian attacks on the eve of Independence Day on August 24.

The German department noted that Russian missile and drone attacks occur almost daily and threaten all regions of Ukraine.
“Given the timing of the Independence Day celebration on August 24, 2026, an increase in attacks on both infrastructure and civilian targets cannot be ruled out,” the German Foreign Ministry’s recommendations state.
According to the agency, fighting continues primarily in eastern and southern Ukraine, but strikes may also be launched in western regions.
Separately, the German Foreign Ministry warned of the danger of missile and drone debris, unexploded ordnance and mines. There are also possible disruptions to electricity, heat, gas and water supplies due to strikes on energy infrastructure.
The recommendations note that Ukraine’s airspace is closed, so entry and exit are only possible by land transport. Rail connections may also be delayed due to damage to infrastructure.
German citizens who have urgent reasons to travel are advised to monitor local reports, know the location of shelters and use the app to receive air traffic alerts.
The German Foreign Ministry also reminded of the increased risks in the territories temporarily occupied by Russia, in particular in parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions and in Crimea.
