MEP Raphael Glucksmann won the French center-left primaries and will be their candidate in the 2027 presidential election. He won 66% of the vote in the first round.
This is reported by France 24.
Glucksmann, 46, is a member of the European Parliament and heads the Place Publique movement. In the European Parliament, he is a member of the Socialists and Democrats group, serves on the Security and Defense Committee, and is a member of the delegation to the EU-Ukraine Association Parliamentary Committee.
After winning the primaries, he said he wanted to offer an alternative to both Emmanuel Macron’s political course and Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s influence on the French left. Reuters notes that Glucksmann positions himself as a pro-European politician and a supporter of support for Ukraine.
What does he say about Ukraine?
Glucksmann has consistently taken a pro-Ukrainian position. In February 2026, he directly stated that “defending Ukraine means defending Europe,” and called Ukraine the continent’s first line of defense.
In his public statements, he has also repeatedly described the Russian war as a threat not only to Ukraine but to the entire European security system. In his keynote address announcing his candidacy for the presidential election, Glucksmann recalled his own experience working with people who opposed Russian imperialism in Georgia and Ukraine.
At the same time, he is a critic of Vladimir Putin’s policies and a supporter of greater strategic independence for Europe in the field of security and defense.
Glucksmann’s victory was a setback for Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure, who received 14.5% of the vote. Glucksmann will now try to unite parts of the French left around his candidacy.
Presidential elections in France are due to be held in 2027.
