The United Kingdom has targeted eight individuals and companies from Kyrgyzstan with sanctions for allegedly assisting Russia in bypassing Western financial restrictions through banks and cryptocurrency schemes, aiming to curb Kremlin-backed funding of the war.

This was reported by the press service of the British government.

On Wednesday, August 20, the UK government announced a new package of sanctions targeting eight individuals and legal entities from Kyrgyzstan accused of helping Russia circumvent international sanctions.

According to British authorities, Moscow has increasingly exploited Kyrgyzstan’s financial system, including cryptocurrency channels, to transfer substantial funds for the purchase of military equipment despite Western controls.

The sanctions hit the Kyrgyz Capital Bank and its director, Kantemir Chalbayev, hardest. London officials noted that the bank was used by Russia to channel funds linked to military procurement.

Also targeted were the cryptocurrency exchanges Grinex and Meer, along with the infrastructure of the new token A7A5. In just the past four months, approximately $9.3 billion has been transferred through this token, highlighting the scale of the scheme. According to the UK, A7A5 was specifically created to bypass restrictive measures.

Stephen Doughty, the UK’s junior minister for Europe, North America, and Overseas Territories, emphasized that sanctions are a crucial tool in combating Kremlin financial operations.

“If the Kremlin believes it can mask its desperate attempts to soften the impact of our sanctions by laundering funds through dubious crypto networks, it is gravely mistaken. These new sanctions maintain pressure on Putin at a critical moment and target the illegal schemes financing his military operations,” Doughty said.

Previously, Russia attempted to evade restrictions by using intermediaries in Central Asia and the Caucasus, including third-country transit of goods and financial transactions. Western nations are now progressively closing such channels through targeted sanctions.

By the way, the European Commission stated that sanctions against Russia will remain in force and will be strengthened as long as the aggression against Ukraine continues. Brussels emphasizes: any negotiations without a real ceasefire will not change Europe’s position.

Recall that the fugitive Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor, who is under sanctions and wanted in his homeland, turned out to be the author of a new global scheme to circumvent sanctions against Russia.
