The head of the UK Ministry of Defense, John Healy, said against the backdrop of a meeting between the American and Russian leaders that London is ready to send its military to Ukraine.
This was reported by the BBC.
According to him, the summit in Alaska could be the first step towards a ceasefire in Ukraine, and if it is achieved, the UK could send its troops to strengthen the ceasefire.
“The UK’s role is to stand with Ukraine on the battlefield and in negotiations, and to prepare, as we have done, leading 30 other countries planning for a military ceasefire and a secure peace through what we call a coalition of the willing,” Healy explained.
As he noted, over the past few months, more than 200 military planners from the coalition of the willing have been developing a ceasefire plan.
“We are prepared to deploy British troops on the ground in Ukraine, partly to reassure the Ukrainians. But also partly to ensure safe skies, safe seas and to strengthen Ukrainian forces, because ultimately the best deterrent against Russia… resuming aggression against Ukraine is Ukraine’s ability to stand up for itself,” the minister stressed.
When asked what would happen if Russia attacked the British military, Healy replied that he would not comment on hypothetical situations, only noting that they would have the right to defend themselves.
Earlier, the British military leadership decided to abandon the idea of creating a 30,000-strong peacekeeping contingent to protect Ukrainian ports and cities. Instead, a more “realistic” strategy is being introduced – air patrols of western Ukraine, training Ukrainian defenders, and demining the Black Sea.
As a reminder, the United Kingdom and the European Union countries have suspended initiatives to deploy their own military units in Ukraine . This step is related to the suspension of US peace talks and Washington’s unwillingness to provide security guarantees for European military personnel.
