Britain has stepped up surveillance of Russian submarines in the North Atlantic. Defence Secretary John Healy said London was “hunting for Russian submarines” amid Moscow’s increased military activity.
This is reported by the BBC .
According to Geely, the number of Russian vessels threatening UK waters has increased by 30 percent. He stressed that this indicates an increase in “Russian aggression from all directions”, which affects not only Ukraine, but also Europe as a whole.
In response, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the country’s submarine activity in the North Atlantic had returned to Cold War levels.
The Royal Air Force and Royal Navy have stepped up surveillance of the region, with P-8 aircraft tracking Russian submarine movements daily, sometimes around the clock, with support from NATO allies.
The P-8 looks like a passenger airliner, but it is equipped with special sensors, cameras, and sonar buoys to search for underwater targets. It can be equipped with torpedoes if necessary.
The aircraft’s nine-person crew monitors both surface and underwater objects. Last year, this type of aircraft monitored the Russian ship Yantar, which was over submarine cables in the Irish Sea.
Analysts note that Western states are increasingly concerned about possible Russian attacks on critical infrastructure, in particular underwater communication cables, damage to which could cause Internet disruptions.
In addition, cooperation between the UK and Germany in the field of defense is deepening. Berlin is investing in the production of British armored vehicles and plans to conduct its own patrols from the Lossiemouth Air Force Base. Germany is also purchasing British Sting Ray torpedoes for its P-8 aircraft.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stressed that Russia is waging hybrid warfare every day – through disinformation, cyberattacks and threats to underwater infrastructure. He said allies need to “understand better what is happening in the North Atlantic and how to counter it.”
By the way, the Russian submarine B-261 “Novorossiysk” surfaced near the French coast . According to preliminary data, this could have happened due to a technical malfunction.
It was previously reported that the Russian vessel Yantar had been conducting long-term operations to monitor underwater infrastructure in the waters of Great Britain and Northern Europe . The ship was used to detect and access critical underwater cables, and also had technical means to intercept traffic and possibly damage the lines.
