The UK has announced a new package of sanctions against Russia, aimed at cracking down on schemes to circumvent Western restrictions. The new measures target vessels carrying Russian oil, LNG tankers, intermediaries and entities linked to Russian military intelligence.
This was reported by the press service of the British government.
The British government said the restrictions were aimed at Russia’s “shadow fleet” – a network of vessels that Moscow uses to export oil to circumvent sanctions.
“These sanctions target vessels, money and entities that support the Russian military economy,” said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
According to London’s new decision, more than 20 oil tankers have been sanctioned. Restrictions have also been imposed on companies that, according to the British authorities, help Russia sell oil and hide the origin of cargoes.
Separately, Britain has imposed sanctions on several vessels used to transport Russian liquefied natural gas. These are tankers linked to the Arctic LNG 2 project, which is under Western restrictions.
In addition to the energy sector, the new sanctions affected Russian military intelligence. London announced restrictions against structures linked to the GRU, as well as companies and individuals suspected of purchasing Western technology for the Russian army.
The sanctions list also includes suppliers of military equipment from other countries and organizations that may help Russia conduct financial transactions that circumvent restrictions.
In total, the UK has already imposed sanctions on over 600 vessels linked to the Russian “shadow fleet” and the transportation of energy resources.
“We, together with our G7 allies, will continue to increase pressure on Putin and his entourage until the Russian war machine is stopped,” Starmer added.
As reported, the European Union has approved another package of sanctions against Russia. The new restrictions target enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex, companies associated with the shadow fleet, the oil business, and Kremlin propagandists.
