British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to announce new sanctions against Russia as allies try to bring Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.

This is reported by Sky News.

It is noted that the Prime Minister “will launch sustained action to hit Putin where it hurts most and make it clear that we will continue to increase the pressure until Russia is ready to commit to a full and unconditional ceasefire and shows that they are serious about working towards a just and lasting peace,” the British government stressed.

Starmer is expected to give a speech in which he will argue that “Russia does not hold all the cards” and urge allies to “seize this moment to increase economic pressure and show President Putin that it is in his interest – and Russia’s – to demonstrate that he is serious about peace.”

It is clear that this is only a statement from the UK so far, but the British government expects other allies to follow suit.

Recall, on Monday, June 16, the Council of the European Union renewed the sanctions imposed against Russia in response to the annexation of Crimea, extending them until June 23, 2026.

As reported, the European Commission proposes to impose additional sanctions on Belarus and apply restrictions on software used by Russian banks.
