Great Britain will strengthen Ukraine’s air defense with the help of frozen Russian assets

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a new £70 million ($95.3 million) military aid package for Ukraine. For the first time, the funds will come not from the budget, but from interest accrued on frozen Russian assets.

The package will include 350 British air defense missiles, which have been adapted to be launched from ground-based installations in record time. They will be used with Raven systems, the number of which in Ukraine will increase to 13 – Britain is transferring five more.

This is the first time that London has officially used frozen Russian funds to provide weapons to Ukraine.

“Russia, not Ukraine, should pay for this barbaric and illegal war by Putin. Using Russian assets to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses is absolutely the right move. Ukraine’s security is also critically important for our own,” Starmer stressed.

As a reminder, on Tuesday, June 17, the United Kingdom announced the introduction of new sanctions against Russia . The restrictions were imposed on 10 individuals and 20 vessels.

As reported, the European Union is developing a plan to increase aid to Ukraine. Thus, the EU seeks to obtain additional billions of euros from frozen Russian assets by transferring them into “riskier investments.”
