Greece has officially filed a diplomatic complaint with Ukraine over a naval drone found near a Greek island in the spring. The incident has been the subject of an investigation by Greek law enforcement and discussions at the diplomatic level.
The official demarche to Kyiv was announced by the spokeswoman for the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lana Zohiou, during a briefing for journalists.
This is an unmanned boat that was discovered by fishermen near the southern part of the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea on May 7. After that, the find was handed over to the coast guard, and the competent authorities began an investigation into the circumstances of its appearance.
The drone was later identified as a Magura V5 naval drone, which is used by Ukraine during hostilities against Russian occupation forces.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not disclose the details of the diplomatic appeal, but confirmed the fact that it was transferred to the Ukrainian side.
Previously, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhiy Tykhyi stated that Kyiv does not have information about the origin of the drone found off the coast of Greece.
“Ukraine currently has no information about the drone found in Greece and is ready to cooperate in investigating the incident if a relevant request is received,” he noted.
Currently, the circumstances of the naval drone entering the Ionian Sea remain the subject of investigation.
As a reminder, Greece has stated that it expects explanations and apologies from Ukraine over a naval drone discovered near the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea. Athens believes that the drone could have posed a danger to civilian vessels.
