Grenades, explosives and “Molotov cocktails”: a series of terrorist attacks against the Trade Center were foiled in Kyiv

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police have prevented a series of terrorist attacks in Kyiv that were being prepared at the behest of Russian special services. Law enforcement officers have detained two previously convicted men who were planning to attack the buildings of territorial procurement centers in the center of the capital.

This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.

According to the investigation, the suspects considered several ways to carry out terrorist attacks. In particular, they planned to attack military facilities using a grenade launcher, combat grenades, and incendiary mixtures, and also considered the possibility of using improvised explosive devices.

The SBU and National Police officers uncovered the preparation of the crimes before they were committed. Both suspects were detained during reconnaissance near potential targets.

As law enforcement officers have established, the tasks of the Russian special services were carried out by two repeat offenders. One of them is a resident of the Chernihiv region, previously convicted of murder. His accomplice was a resident of the Sumy region, with whom they previously served their sentences in the same colony.

To implement the plan, the men also had to recruit a third participant, who is currently hiding abroad.

The investigation documented how the suspects drove around the city in cars and filmed potential targets for attack on their phones. They recorded the location of security facilities, the presence of security guards and surveillance cameras, and studied possible escape routes.

During the detention of one of the suspects, law enforcement officers discovered a live grenade in the car, which, according to the investigation, was prepared for a terrorist attack.

The two detainees were informed of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – preparation for a terrorist act in advance of a conspiracy by a group of persons. Both are being held without bail. They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The third alleged member of the group was informed of the suspicion in absentia.

It was previously reported that counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine prevented another terrorist attack in Khmelnytskyi. SBU employees detained a 16-year-old Russian agent who was preparing an explosion on behalf of Russian special services.
