Israel is deporting Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg for the second time after she was detained along with dozens of foreign activists while attempting to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip.
This is reported by the Times of Israel .
According to journalists, along with Thunberg, 79 other activists from various countries are being deported from the country – among them 28 French citizens, 27 Greeks, 15 Italians and 9 Swedes. All those detained will be taken to Greece, from where they will be able to return to their homeland.
Meanwhile, 28 Spanish citizens remain in Israeli custody. Another 21 Spaniards arrested in the same operation have already returned home. In total, Israel has deported 170 people who were detained after trying to “break the siege” of the Palestinian enclave.
The day before, Greta Thunberg reported to Swedish officials about ill-treatment in Israeli custody after being detained and removed from the Global Sumud flotilla, which was transporting humanitarian aid to Gaza.
According to correspondence sent by the Swedish Foreign Ministry to people close to Thunberg, she complained of lack of water and food, dehydration, a rash that she said was caused by bedbugs, and prolonged sitting on hard surfaces. Other members of the flotilla confirmed that she was forced to hold flags while being photographed. The identities of the flags are unknown.
Thunberg was among 437 activists, parliamentarians and lawyers on 40 ships of the flotilla that Israel intercepted at sea between 2 and 3 October. Most of the participants were held in the Ketzioti (Ansar III) prison in the Negev desert. Flotilla lawyers and the NGO Adalah allege systematic violations of the detainees’ rights: restrictions on water, food, medicine and access to legal representatives, as well as cases of verbal and physical abuse.
“They pulled Greta’s hair in front of our eyes, beat her and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They did everything imaginable to her as a warning to others,” Turkish activist Ersinçelik told the news agency.
Israeli authorities deny the allegations, saying that all detainees were provided with food, water, access to medical and legal assistance, and that their rights were respected. A Swedish official said in an email that Israeli authorities had asked Thunberg to sign a document. The Swedish embassy in Israel is in contact with authorities regarding the detainees’ medical needs and the possibility of their return to their homeland.
As you know, in June , Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg was deported from Israel after her participation in an attempt to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip . She was on board the ship “Madeleine”, which the Israeli military intercepted near the sea border. The day before, the Israeli military intercepted the ship Madleen with Greta Thunberg , which was trying to “break through” into the blockaded Gaza.
By the way, US President Donald Trump said that Hamas must agree to his peace plan for Gaza by Sunday evening , otherwise the group will face “unprecedented consequences.”
Earlier it was reported that US President Donald Trump has set a deadline for Hamas to accept the ceasefire proposal. US President Donald Trump also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, after which he announced a plan for a ceasefire in Gaza.
