Gripen for Ukraine: another country is preparing fighters for the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Sweden has announced its readiness to expand military assistance to Ukraine and is considering the possibility of transferring Gripen combat aircraft.

This was announced by Swedish Defense Minister Poul Jonsson before the start of the meeting of the heads of defense agencies of NATO countries in Brussels, Ukrinform reports.

According to Jönsson, Stockholm has already put together a new aid package with Norway and Denmark. The total value of Sweden’s contribution is 250 million euros, and the country’s government does not rule out further support packages.

“We want to see more concrete steps to strengthen military assistance to Ukraine. Support should not be reduced – on the contrary, it needs to be scaled up,” the minister emphasized.

Sweden is participating in the dialogue on the aviation coalition and is ready to help Ukraine not only financially, but also technologically. The priority is radar reconnaissance and early warning aircraft, which will help Ukrainian pilots use the F-16 more effectively.

At the same time, Jonsson admitted: Ukraine is interested in Swedish Gripen fighters, and Stockholm is conducting direct negotiations with Kyiv regarding this possibility.

“The transfer of Gripen is not currently ruled out. We understand the high interest from Ukraine,” the minister noted.

However, Sweden emphasizes the need for a balanced approach: operating three types of Western fighters (F-16, Mirage, Gripen) simultaneously could be an operational challenge for Ukraine. However, Jönsson assured that the emergence of modern aircraft has already significantly strengthened Ukraine’s air defense.

Recall that Deputy Minister of Defense Lieutenant General Ivan Havrylyuk stated that Ukraine expects to receive not only American F-16 fighters, but also French Mirage and Swedish Gripen.

By the way, Ukraine will receive all the F-16 fighters that were promised by Belgium, but their transfer depends on the training of Ukrainian pilots and the completion of technical procedures.
