GRU agent infiltrated the Armed Forces of Ukraine through mobilization: he and his wife were detained in Kharkiv
The SBU has exposed a Russian GRU spy couple in Kharkiv, which included a Defense Forces serviceman and his wife. After being recruited on behalf of Russian intelligence, the man mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine to obtain information directly from within the Ukrainian military.
This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine. According to the special service, the operation was carried out by military counterintelligence with the assistance of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian special services recruited a Kharkiv resident through his neighbor, a professor at a local university. The SBU had previously exposed him for coordinating Russian strikes on the city.
After the professor’s arrest, the man went to serve in the territorial defense brigade on the instructions of the Russians. He was assigned as a reserve soldier in a reserve company.
While in the army, the agent, under the guise of official trips, collected data on the location of Ukrainian air defense units, electronic warfare equipment, and fortifications in Kharkiv.
In addition, he plotted on Google maps the locations of local CHP plants and key electrical substations that provide electricity to Kharkiv and surrounding areas.
Later, the military man recruited his wife to work for Russian intelligence. The woman would go around the city and look for Ukrainian military bases, after which she would pass the information she had gathered to her husband. Later, she would report directly to the Russian curator.
The next task for the military man was to undergo training as an unmanned systems operator. After that, he was to pass on to the Russian side the information and materials he had received during the training. In the future, the agent hoped to get a position in the UAV unit, which would allow him to expand his espionage activities.
Counterintelligence officers documented the couple’s activities and detained both of them. The husband was arrested during another reconnaissance mission, and his wife was arrested at her place of residence.
During the searches, 12 smartphones, four laptops, and two tablets were seized from them. According to the SBU, the suspects regularly changed their equipment to maintain secret communications with the Russian GRU.
Both detainees were charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — high treason committed under martial law. They are being held without bail.
If found guilty, the couple faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
As a reminder, the Security Service of Ukraine exposed a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who was recruited by Russian special services to collect information about Ukrainian troops in the Odessa region . The agent was supposed to use the obtained data to adjust Russian strikes on southern Ukraine.
The SBU reportedly detained an FSB agent in the Rivne region who was collecting data on Ukrainian military personnel and preparing contract killings of Defense Forces soldiers . According to investigators, the man also helped the Russians prepare strikes in the region.
