The June heatwave that swept across Europe has already led to around 3,700 additional deaths in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, with France suffering the most casualties, with more than 2,000 deaths due to the high temperatures.
Reuters reports this.
According to preliminary data from the French authorities, the heat caused 2,025 additional deaths. French Health Minister Stephanie Rist said that the largest increase in mortality was recorded among people over 45 years old.
The country has also seen a sharp increase in deaths at home, with health authorities reporting a 91% increase in deaths from June 22 to 28 compared to the previous week. There has also been an increase in deaths in nursing homes and medical facilities.
In Belgium, 1,200 additional deaths were recorded between June 18 and 29. Of these, 530 cases were in people over the age of 85, and another 180 deaths were recorded among people under the age of 65.
“Such excess mortality during heatwaves is unprecedented in our country,” the Belgian Ministry of Health said.
In the Netherlands, authorities reported about 480 additional deaths, most of which were among people over 80 years old.
As previously reported, about 1,000 people have died in France due to the abnormal heat wave that has been ongoing since June 24. Most of the victims are people over the age of 65, and the authorities are canceling mass events due to the risk of new deaths.
As a reminder, the World Health Organization reported that since June 21, more than 1,300 excess deaths related to the abnormal heat wave have been recorded in Europe.
