Heavy rains and floods kill 68 people in India and Nepal

Heavy rains, floods and landslides have killed at least 68 people in northern India and Nepal over the past three days, with the worst toll in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where 56 people have died.

Over 1,000 houses were damaged in Uttar Pradesh. The state received 66.5 mm of rainfall between Friday and Sunday, compared to the seasonal average of 7.6 mm.

According to local authorities, the heavy rainfall was intensified due to a pressure depression over the Bay of Bengal, which moved inland.

The rains have also caused significant damage to crops, with farmers fearing possible delays in planting next season.

Floods and landslides have killed 12 people in Nepal since Thursday, with seven others missing, Shanti Mahat, a spokeswoman for Nepal’s disaster management agency, told AFP.

In the Indian state of Odisha, more than 70,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas due to rising river levels. The rains damaged bridges and culverts, and authorities closed the tourist site of Devkund to visitors.

As a reminder, 53 Ukrainian citizens went missing in Nepal after a large-scale flood on the border with Tibet . Among them is a group of 46 Ukrainian tourists, with whom contact was lost on the morning of August 26. Currently, there is no confirmed data on the number of dead or injured Ukrainians.

Flash floods in China and Nepal have reportedly caused widespread loss of life. In total, more than 1,300 people are missing and the confirmed death toll has already exceeded 160.
