A top U.S. Army general is retiring early. He leads U.S. ground forces in Europe and Africa and was one of the key military officials coordinating aid to Ukraine.
This is reported by the Financial Times.
According to the publication, the decision was made as part of a personnel shakeup being carried out by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Donaghue is expected to announce his resignation in the near future, and will officially end his service in July.
The general is leaving his post just months after the dismissal of General Randy George as US Army Chief of Staff, a decision that has already drawn criticism from some in the Pentagon.
Christopher Donaghue is a four-star general with combat experience in Iraq, Syria, and other regions.
In 2021, he became the last American service member to leave Afghanistan as the US operation ended.
In recent years, Donaghue played a key role in coordinating military support for Ukraine in its war against Russia. The reasons for his resignation were not officially announced.
The Financial Times notes that personnel changes in the US military leadership could cause a new wave of tension in the army.
