“Hell on Earth”: Residents of Occupied Oleshky Face the Threat of Starvation
Олешки
A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in the temporarily occupied town of Oleshky in the Kherson region. Around 2,000 people remain in the town, facing critical shortages of food and medicine, while leaving the occupied settlement is effectively impossible.
This was stated by the head of the Oleshkiv city military administration, Tetyana Hasanenko, on Radio Charter.
“The Bible writes about hell, but hell is on earth—and it is in Oleshki,” she described the situation in the occupied city.
According to local authorities, about 1.7–2 thousand people remain in Oleshki directly. At the same time, the occupation makes it impossible to establish the exact number of residents. According to Hasanenko’s updated data, up to 6 thousand people may be in the entire Oleshkiv community, including at least 180 children.
The supply situation remains critical. The last food truck arrival in the city was on May 26. An attempt to deliver food on September 1 also failed: the transport was forced to turn around because of a mined road, and on the way back, drones attacked it.
Residents of the city also have limited access to medicine and medical care. Road mines, shelling, and constant drone attacks make it virtually impossible to deliver essential supplies and evacuate people.
Hasanenko noted that the humanitarian crisis has affected more than Oleshki. According to the MVA, five of the community’s 13 settlements have been completely destroyed, and the situation in the others also remains extremely difficult.
As a reminder, Russia is preparing to hold another illegal “election” to the State Duma of the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territories. The SBU called on Ukrainians at the TOT not to help the occupiers organize pseudo-voting.
