Hezbollah said it targeted a missile defense position south of Haifa and called the attack “revenge for the blood of the Supreme Leader of the Muslims, Ali Khamenei,” who was killed on February 28 at the start of the US-Israeli operation in Iran. The statement also called the shelling a “warning” demanding that Israel leave five border posts on Lebanese territory.

The IDF confirmed that Hezbollah was behind the attack and launched strikes on the group’s targets across Lebanon, including facilities in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

“The terrorist organization Hezbollah is destroying the state of Lebanon, and responsibility for the escalation lies with it,” the IDF said.

The Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces announced the start of a ground operation against the group.

“We have launched an offensive operation against Hezbollah, we are not only defending, we are now attacking. We need to prepare for several days of combat operations, very many. Strong defensive training is needed, and offensive training is now going on in waves, constantly. And, of course, we need to constantly use opportunities,” the chief of staff said.
