Hong Kong hit by powerful typhoon Wifa: hundreds of flights canceled, dozens injured

Powerful Typhoon Wifa hit Hong Kong on July 20, causing widespread destruction, transportation disruption and casualties. Within hours, the storm left hundreds of trees in its wake, damaged buildings and cancelled flights, and raised the storm warning level to the maximum of 10.

It is noted that Hong Kong was in the center of a powerful typhoon “Vipha”, with wind gusts exceeding 167 km/h. In the first three hours alone, more than 110 mm of precipitation fell in the northern part of the city, which caused local flooding and massive road accidents.
The weather service raised the storm warning level to the maximum level 10, which remained in place for about seven hours. The warning level was later lowered to eight.
The disaster caused significant damage to infrastructure:
- Almost 400 flights were canceled,
- About 80 thousand passengers were left without transport,
- Public transport, including ferry services, has been suspended.
- 471 trees felled,
- In the North Point area, strong winds tore scaffolding off a residential building, and debris littered the road.
During the typhoon, 26 people were injured, and another 253 people were forced to seek shelter in specially equipped shelters.
Local authorities urged residents to be careful and refrain from traveling around the city, as the consequences of the natural disaster are still being eliminated.
