During the international summit in Yerevan, where leaders of democratic states and NATO leadership gathered, Ukraine and Armenia declared a transition to long-term cooperation.
Political scientist Oleg Sahakyan analyzed the change in geopolitical accents in the region, pointing to the gradual displacement of Russian influence and the growth of Kyiv’s role as a security partner.
“Russia is losing the region. Ukraine is entering the region with its own agenda. Against the background of our geopolitical relevance, security, as a donor, technology, knowledge and security as such. We have this opportunity and we are using it,” the studio guest noted.
According to him, Armenia demonstrates a clear pro-Western vector, despite the presence of Russian military bases and energy dependence on Moscow. Official Yerevan has appealed to the European Union for support in combating the Kremlin’s hybrid attacks.
Sahakyan noted that the political path of the current Armenian leadership has many parallels with Ukrainian events after 2004, when the country tried to balance, preserving its sovereignty under the pressure of a foreign military presence.
The political scientist recalls that anti-Russian sentiment in Armenian society has significantly increased after the loss of control over Karabakh, which opened a window of opportunity for deeper integration with the West. At the same time, Sahakyan emphasized that support for Ukrainians among ordinary citizens of Armenia remains consistently high, and the summit itself has become an important image-building event for the current government before the upcoming elections.
As a reminder, the first-ever bilateral summit between Armenia and the European Union took place in Yerevan on May 5. The event is being attended by the Armenian leadership and top EU officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa.
It should be noted that on June 7, parliamentary elections will be held in Armenia, in which the country must decide whether to move closer to Europe or Russia. This state was until recently under the strong influence of the Russian Federation, and there is still a Russian military base with several thousand soldiers on its territory.
