The international community may soon announce a temporary cessation of hostilities in the area around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. This is necessary to carry out emergency repair work after a long blackout at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
This is reported by Sky News.
According to journalists, a decision on a short-term “pause” in hostilities may be made tomorrow. The aim is to create conditions for the restoration of two key power lines that supply power to the nuclear plant: one of them passes through the territory controlled by Russian troops, the other – from the side controlled by Ukraine.
The Zaporizhzhia NPP has been without power for more than 21 days, operating in emergency mode from diesel generators. The external power supply line was most recently damaged by shelling by Russian troops.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed that restoration work is scheduled to begin in the coming days to restore the plant to a stable power supply. He said both sides in the conflict have agreed to continue the repairs.
“This is an extremely sensitive issue, as it concerns an active combat zone. I am consulting with both sides, and they assure me that they are interested in carrying out repairs,” Grossi noted.
He also emphasized that providing the station with generators is only a temporary measure that does not guarantee the stability and safety of the facility.
As reported, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been without external power supply for several weeks, which poses a direct threat to nuclear safety . The situation arose due to damage to a 750 kilovolt line that runs near the Zaporizhzhia TPP and is currently located in temporarily occupied territory.
