Following the US and Israeli strikes on Iran, Russia could use the situation to strengthen its position on Ukraine. At the same time, Moscow’s inability to provide military assistance to Tehran could hurt its reputation.

This is reported by Politico .

The publication notes that after Syria and Venezuela, Iran has become another country that has faced limited support from Moscow. Analysts emphasize that despite the Kremlin’s statements about a multipolar world, at critical moments its response to the needs of its allies has been restrained.

“Putin’s friendship has its limits,” the publication writes.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Kremlin has positioned itself as one of the centers of power. However, as journalists note, in the situation with Iran, Moscow has not provided direct military support.

The article recalls that in February, Iran and Russia held joint naval exercises in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean. However, on February 28, when the situation escalated, there was no report of military assistance to Tehran from Moscow.

It is noted that despite the strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Iran signed in 2025, the document does not contain a provision on mutual defense.

According to analysts, Russia’s inability to intervene in the situation could deal a blow to its international image, but at the same time creates opportunities for domestic and foreign rhetoric.

In particular, Moscow can focus attention on the actions of the West and the United States, accusing them of violating international norms, and also use the events to strengthen its tough stance on Ukraine.

In the event of the failure of peace negotiations on Ukraine mediated by Washington, the Kremlin, as the publication notes, may have additional arguments ready to justify its policy.

The day before, it became known that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli operation . His body has allegedly been found, but Iran has not officially confirmed this information.

Earlier it was reported that on Saturday, Western airstrikes targeted the leadership of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security in Tehran . The attack killed at least 4 high-ranking officials of the agency and caused panic within the structure.

Recall that on February 28, Israel carried out preemptive strikes on Iran, as well as attacked Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon . A state of emergency was declared throughout the country. Later, it became known that the strikes on Iran were a joint operation between Israel and the United States . After that, US President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States had launched a military campaign in Iran .
