During the presentation of the government’s action program, Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that after the end of the war, the size of the Ukrainian army will not decrease sharply.
This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine.
The head of the defense ministry emphasized that in peacetime, Russia will still remain an existential threat to Ukraine, and therefore the process of reducing the size of the Armed Forces of Ukraine must be planned and calculated.
“The best guarantee of our security is our strong Armed Forces, Security and Defense Forces, equipped with the best equipment, best trained and well-financed,” Shmyhal assured.
According to him, Ukraine is already discussing with partners what the army should be like after the war.
“First, it must be contractual and professional. Second, it will not decrease sharply after the end of this war, it will be a very planned and calculated process and it will not be quick,” the minister explained.
He added that the number of troops is currently being calculated – 1 million, 800 thousand or another number.
