Hulyaipole almost fell under the onslaught of the Russians: what happened at the front

The situation around Hulyaipol over the past week almost turned into a catastrophe – the city could have been occupied in the next few days. However, timely decisions and a quick reaction of the military command made it possible to avoid a breakthrough.

After the loss of Poltavka and Uspenivka, as previously reported, Ukrainian forces failed to regain control of their previous positions, despite several counterattack attempts. In this regard, one of the ShV units was instructed to urgently establish new defensive lines south of Novouspenivske. Meanwhile, the 102nd Brigade of the Ukrainian Defense Forces on the right flank continued to hold back the onslaught of the invaders, albeit with forced retreats.

After the enemy broke through the defenses of neighboring units on the left, the 102nd found itself with an open flank and infiltrated groups of Russians in the rear. The situation was additionally complicated by a management failure in one of the battalions: the fighters were left without a command and, without clear instructions, decided to leave on their own. Almost two companies began to leave the area of Zeleny Gay and Vysokoye in small groups.

Realizing the criticality of the moment, the command sent reinforcements – fighters of the 225th separate assault battalion and units of one of the mechanized brigades. They quickly deployed a new defensive line directly in front of Gulyaipole. Due to the chaotic withdrawal of individual units, there were cases of “friendly fire”. Later, cover groups were sent to stabilize the front. Unfortunately, one of these groups was ambushed: five soldiers were captured and shot west of Zeleny Gay by the Russians.

The scale of the confusion was also shown by another tragic incident: in the rear area, a Russian sabotage group captured and executed four Ukrainian pilots.

Now, thanks to the coordinated actions of the command of the OK “South”, units of the 225th OSHP, and other defense forces, the situation has been stabilized – the chaotic movement of troops has disappeared, the Russian offensive in the direction of Hulyaipol has significantly slowed down, and a new defensive line has already been formed and is operating.

Due to the resonance and complexity of the events, law enforcement and the military ombudsman’s office have joined the analysis. They are to clarify the circumstances of the incidents and assess the actions of all parties involved.

As previously reported, Russian troops are intensifying their offensive in the areas of Hulyaipol in Zaporizhia Oblast and Velykymykhailivka in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The occupiers are taking advantage of the consequences of strikes on Ukrainian logistics and the difficult operation of Ukrainian drones due to bad weather.

Let us remind you that the situation on the front in the Zaporizhia region is the most difficult during the full-scale invasion: the Russian occupiers are trying to advance in the Orikhiv and Hulyaipil directions.
