Last night, the Ukrainian Defense Forces attacked Moscow and the Moscow region with nearly 500 drones. Digital and industrial infrastructure facilities in the Saratov region of the Russian Federation were also hit, including a Sberbank data center and a metallurgical plant in Balakovo.

This is reported by Russian media, citing a post by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

According to Sobyanin, Russian air defense began shooting down Ukrainian strike drones flying towards Moscow after 11:00 p.m. on October 13. At 11:47 p.m., he announced the destruction of 20 drones, and at 2:50 a.m., he reported repelling an attack by another 30 drones.

In total, according to the mayor of the Russian capital, there were about 10 waves of attacks during the night.

“From 8:30 p.m. on October 13 to 7:00 a.m. on October 14, 493 UAVs flew towards the Moscow region. Most of them were neutralized by air defense forces on the far approaches. Another 180 drones were destroyed on the approach to Moscow,” Sobyanin wrote on the morning of October 14.

According to estimates by the Russian TASS news agency, last night the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out one of the largest attacks on Moscow and the region in the last two years.

Moscow’s Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports were temporarily closed due to the threat of drone strikes. Vnukovo airport was closed for more than eight hours, with passengers removed from all flights.

In addition, fires broke out in Balakovo, Saratov Oblast, Russia, after a UAV attack. According to the Telegram channel Exilenova+, a Sberbank data center and a metallurgical enterprise were hit.

Fires broke out in several areas of the city, and local residents reported dozens of explosions. Satellite images also showed flames in the area where a data center is located.

Sberbank’s data center is still under construction, but it is already partially operational. The project cost is 122.2 billion rubles. After completion, it should become one of the largest data centers in Russia. The facility is intended to provide the bank’s IT infrastructure, and, according to preliminary plans, to host the services of the state digital platform “GosTech”.

Energy facilities and the Balakovo Steel Plant could also be hit. The enterprise produces steel and rolled metal, including rebar and long-length steel. Its capacity exceeds 1 million tons of rolled steel per year, and its production includes its own steelmaking complex.

Saratov Region Governor Roman Busargin confirmed the drone attack and said several residential buildings in Balakovo were damaged. He did not specify other consequences of the strike.

It was previously reported that on the night of October 13, drones attacked industrial facilities in two cities in the Stavropol Territory of the Russian Federation – Solnechnodolsk and Nevinnomyssk. Both settlements are home to large energy enterprises, but the Russian authorities did not specify which facilities were hit and whether they were damaged.
