Foreign Minister Andriy Szybiga said that Hungarian authorities in Budapest detained seven Ukrainian citizens — employees of Oschadbank — and seized the money they were transporting.

This was reported to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

According to Szybiga, the Ukrainians were traveling in two bank cars in transit through Hungary between Austria and Ukraine. They were transporting cash as part of a regular service between state-owned banks.

The minister stated that it is currently unknown why they were detained, as well as what condition the Ukrainians are in and whether they have the opportunity to contact their relatives.

Szibiga called the actions of the Hungarian authorities hostage-taking and actual theft of money. He also criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, saying that such actions are akin to “state terrorism and racketeering.”

Ukraine has already sent an official note to Hungary demanding the immediate release of the detained citizens.

In addition, Kyiv plans to appeal to the European Union to provide a legal assessment of the actions of the Hungarian authorities.

As a reminder, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Ukraine is blocking the transportation of oil through the Druzhba pipeline and threatened to resume the process by force.
