Budapest has adopted a resolution rejecting Ukraine’s membership in the EU, further funding of the war, and “efforts to transform the European Union into a military alliance.”

This was stated by Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs.

It is noted that the resolution was adopted by 142 votes in favor, 28 against and 4 abstentions.

The document states that Hungary opposes because “the country is in a state of war and its accession risks making the European Union a direct party to the conflict.” The resolution calls on the Hungarian government not to support the start of substantive accession negotiations with Ukraine and to oppose its membership in the EU.

In addition, lawmakers also warned of the financial consequences of continuing support for Ukraine, noting that the EU has already provided 193.3 billion euros in aid since the start of the war and plans additional loans. According to the resolution, Ukraine’s potential share of the next seven-year EU budget could exceed 360 billion euros, which could be made up of cohesion and agricultural funds for member states.

“The resolution calls on the government to support international peace efforts, avoid sending money or weapons to Ukraine, and prevent both Hungary and the EU from being drawn into the war. It also calls for resistance to initiatives that would turn the EU into a military alliance and any attempts by EU institutions to circumvent the unanimity rule in decision-making,” the Hungarian politician said in a post.
