Hungary again blocked Ukraine’s progress towards the EU

Hungary has once again blocked Ukraine’s progress in the negotiations on accession to the European Union. Budapest did not support the approval of the screening results of clusters 2 and 3, which are necessary for further preparation for their opening.

This was reported by “European Truth” citing sources in the EU following the meeting of the EU Council working group on COELA enlargement.

According to one of the publication’s interlocutors, the positions of the member states have not changed, and the results of the screening of the two clusters have not been approved.

These are cluster No. 2 “Domestic Market” and cluster No. 3 “Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth”.

Approval of the screening results is a necessary procedural step before further preparation for the opening of negotiation clusters.

This is not the first time Hungary has blocked this decision. Back on September 8, EU countries tried to agree on the screening results of clusters 2 and 3, but due to Budapest’s position, consensus could not be reached.

The process of approving these results has been ongoing since July. At that time, Hungary also refused to support Ukraine’s progress, agreeing only to Moldova’s separate movement on one of the clusters. Most EU states did not support the separation of the negotiation processes of Ukraine and Moldova.

Recall, earlier “Pryamiy” wrote that on September 8, the COELA working group had already tried to agree on the opening of clusters 2 and 3 for Ukraine, but Hungary continued to block the decision.

“Pryamiy” also reported that the EU is preparing roadmaps for the further movement of Ukraine, Moldova, Montenegro, and Albania towards membership.
