Hungarian President Tamás Sulók has announced that parliamentary elections will be held in the country in a few months — for current Prime Minister Viktor Orban, it will be “the most difficult battle for power.”
Thiswas reported by Politico.
“The vote will take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026. One of the cornerstones of democracy is the right to free elections. I urge everyone to exercise this right,” Sulok wrote on social media.
In the spring, Orban, who has been the Prime Minister of Hungary for many years, will face a serious threat.
During his years in power, he has been criticized for a retreat from democracy and the rule of law. Orbán has also clashed with European officials over issues related to support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, and LGBT rights.
According to a poll conducted by Politico, almost half of Hungarians support the opposition Tisza party, led by Peter Magyar. In contrast, Orban’s ruling Fidesz party has support at 37%. Between 1% and 5% of Hungarians are ready to vote for others.
Opposition leader Magyar is campaigning on promises to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and fight corruption, and to provide voters with a clear alternative to Orban’s party.
Recall that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Ukraine supposedly has no chance of winning the war against Russia , and financial support from the European Union is “madness.” He also expressed confidence that the European Union is losing economically by helping Ukraine.
