Hungary asked the US to make an exception from new tariffs on Russian energy carriers

Hungary has asked the US to exempt it from new tariffs on countries that buy Russian energy, while Budapest has said it needs to diversify its energy supply.

This was stated by the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian Parliament, Márton Haidő, after a visit to Washington.

According to him, during meetings with representatives of the Republican majority of the US House of Representatives, he discussed the further development of Hungarian-American parliamentary relations, as well as the risks for Hungary associated with energy dependence on Russia.

Hajdu noted that he asked his American partners to exempt Hungary from the new legislation, which imposes duties on countries that purchase Russian energy.

At the same time, the Hungarian deputy emphasized the need to diversify the country’s energy supply sources.

He also stated that the political force “Tys” is aware of the risks and disadvantages of dependence on Russian energy. According to Gajdu, a plan to overcome it will be presented in the near future.

It was previously reported that the US House of Representatives passed a bill on “hellish sanctions” against Russia on the night of September 17, Kyiv time. Now it must be signed by US President Donald Trump.

In addition, on Thursday, September 17, India said it would continue to buy energy from various suppliers despite the passage of a new sanctions and tariffs law by the US House of Representatives. New Delhi stressed the importance of ensuring the country’s energy security.
