Hungary has officially labeled Russia a threat and changed its foreign policy course.

The new Hungarian government, led by Péter Magyar, has formally enshrined a change in the country’s foreign policy. Budapest now explicitly identifies Russia as a threat to Hungary, Europe, and the international order.

Der Spiegel reports this, citing a document prepared for the UN General Assembly and signed by Prime Minister Péter Magyar. The document was published in the Hungarian Official Gazette.

In it, the Hungarian government condemns Russian aggression and declares its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

Budapest separately notes the threat that Russian policy poses to the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia.

The Hungarian government also supports international efforts to achieve sustainable peace and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.

This statement effectively marks a serious revision of the course of the previous government of Viktor Orban, which for years maintained close relations with Moscow.

During Orbán’s tenure, Hungary repeatedly blocked or weakened EU sanctions against Russia, and the Budapest government regularly criticized Ukrainian policy.

Now, Hungary’s new authorities are not simply distancing themselves from Moscow, but are officially including Russia in their list of threats, which could significantly change Budapest’s position within the EU and its attitude toward supporting Ukraine.
