Hungary has suspended consideration of Ukraine’s and Moldova’s applications for EU membership: what is the reason?

Hungary has suspended consideration of applications from Ukraine and Moldova to join the European Union. Budapest has postponed a decision on opening all official negotiation clusters for Ukraine and Moldova.

This is reported by Politico.

It is known that after the opening of the first negotiation cluster, both countries declared their readiness to open the remaining clusters by mid-July.

As Hungary opposed sending a letter to the European Council and the European Commission on behalf of the 27 member states, compliance with these deadlines could be disrupted.

According to diplomats, Budapest is the only country that opposed this initiative, but the decision requires unanimous consent from all 27 member states.

The proposal will be discussed again next week.

Hungary did not oppose the opening of the first cluster for Ukraine, but its government insists that negotiation clusters for Kyiv should not be opened too quickly.

The Hungarian Prime Minister explains this by saying that it could send a “bad signal” to the Western Balkan countries, which are also working towards EU accession.

Previously, “Pryamiy” reported that Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Anita Orban stated that the negotiation process on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union may be suspended if Kyiv does not fulfill agreements regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia.

Also, EU countries did not support the opening of all negotiation clusters for Ukraine’s faster European integration . European leaders limited themselves to formulating further steps for Kyiv.
