Hungary may unblock aid to Ukraine: details

Hungary’s new leader, Peter Magyar, has begun talks with the European Union to unlock tens of billions of euros in financial aid, totaling about 34 billion euros.

This is reported by Politico.

According to the publication, Budapest is seeking 18 billion euros in financial support and another 16 billion euros in defense loans. At the same time, the EU is putting forward a number of conditions, including judicial reform, the fight against corruption and a change in position on Ukraine.

Magyar has already had a phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. During the talks, he promised to implement anti-corruption measures, ensure the independence of the courts, and ensure media freedom.

“I can say that it is extremely important to get this money and as soon as possible,” he said.

Brussels welcomes the start of the dialogue. Von der Leyen said the EU is ready to quickly start working with the new Hungarian government to make progress.

One of the key demands of the European Union remains that Hungary lift its veto on a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, as well as support for new sanctions against Russia. Magyar made it clear that he will not block Kyiv’s funding.

He also announced his readiness to join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. Magyar plans to make his first foreign visit to Poland, where he intends to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk to study the experience of unfreezing funds.

It was previously reported that Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar, whose party won the elections, opposed Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU, but said that he would not block a €90 billion loan for Kyiv.

We remind you that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has lifted its recommendations for citizens to refrain from traveling to Hungary.
