The European Union and Hungary are continuing negotiations on unlocking €90 billion in funding for Ukraine. The Hungarian side links its decision to the resumption of Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline.

This is reported by Bloomberg .

The outgoing government of Hungary has announced its readiness to unblock a loan for Ukraine this week, amid negotiations between the new leadership in Budapest and Brussels regarding access to frozen funding.

Outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest had received information from Ukraine via Brussels about the possible imminent resumption of oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline, which was damaged in an attack in late January.

“Hungary’s position has not changed. If there is oil, there will be money,” said Viktor Orban.

A European Commission official confirmed that the body was in contact with stakeholders to help restore oil supplies through the pipeline, and stressed that all EU countries must honour their commitments to the loan agreed at the leaders’ summit in December.

Hungary’s Minister for EU Affairs Janos Boka said that a decision to unblock the aid could be made on April 22 during a meeting of EU ambassadors, provided that oil supplies are restored.

According to journalists, these funds are important for Ukraine in the context of the ongoing war, as well as in view of the reduction in support from the United States after Donald Trump’s return to the presidency in 2025. It is also noted that the available resources may only last Ukraine until June.

By the way, the European Union hopes to unblock a billion-dollar loan for Ukraine as soon as possible and impose new sanctions against Russia against the backdrop of Viktor Orban’s defeat in the parliamentary elections in Hungary.

As a reminder, on Thursday, March 19, a summit of EU leaders was held in Brussels, where one of the key issues was financial support for Ukraine , in particular the possible unlocking of a 90 billion euro aid package.

However, European leaders were unable to convince Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to abandon the decision to block a $90 billion loan for Ukraine.
