Hungary is seeking to join forces with the Czech Republic and Slovakia to form an alliance within the European Union that would take a skeptical stance on supporting Ukraine.

Hungarian Prime Minister’s adviser, Balázs Orbán, said this in a comment to Politico.

According to him, the Hungarian prime minister hopes to coordinate positions with Andrej Babiš, whose right-wing populist party recently won the Czech parliamentary elections, and with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. The countries plan to coordinate actions before EU leaders’ meetings, particularly during preparatory meetings before the summits.

“I think it will happen – and it will be increasingly visible,” Orban’s political director said, commenting on the possibility of creating a bloc that could act in concert in the European Council.

Politico notes that the formation of such an alliance could complicate EU decisions on financial and military support for Ukraine.

Balázs Orbán mentioned the Visegrád Four (Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland), which operated until 2022, when the Law and Justice party was in power in Warsaw. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the group effectively disintegrated: Poland adopted a pro-Ukrainian stance, while Hungary continues to maintain contacts with Moscow.

The new alliance is expected to consist of only three countries, as Poland’s current Prime Minister Donald Tusk remains a staunch supporter of Ukraine.

Fico and Babiš, on the contrary, call for dialogue with Russia, oppose “excessive” economic pressure, and are skeptical about further aid to Kyiv. The Czech Foreign Minister has already warned that Babiš could become “Orbán’s puppet” at the European Council level.

As a reminder, Donald Trump intends to meet with the head of the Kremlin in Hungary in order to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.

It was later announced that preparations for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Budapest had been halted .
