The leader of the Hungarian Fidesz faction, Mate Kocsis, is proposing to seize the money and gold seized from the Ukrainian Oschadbank last week.
This was reported by the Telex publication.
The politician has submitted a corresponding bill to the Hungarian parliament. It will be considered in an “emergency procedure.”
Kocsis suggested that the assets be considered seized until the investigation initiated by the National Tax and Customs Service is completed.
In turn, opposition party deputies criticized Kocsis’ decision to consider the proposal in an expedited manner, as there is not enough time to review the details.
Instead, he was accused of promoting the project ahead of the elections. The Fidesz leader denied such claims.
Members of the National Security Committee, where Kochish presented the bill, voted four in favor of the proposal, with two other politicians abstaining.
Ukraine has already commented on Hungary’s attempts to legalize the property. According to Foreign Minister Andriy Szybiga, Kyiv will hold all those involved accountable.
“Hungary is sinking into a spiral of lawlessness. After stealing money from the Ukrainian state bank, they are now proposing a bill to “legalize” illegal seizure. This is a de facto admission that Hungary’s actions have no legal basis. They are simply adding lawlessness to lawlessness,” the Foreign Minister emphasized .
Recently, Hungarian authorities in Budapest detained seven Ukrainian citizens – employees of Oschadbank – and seized the money they were transporting. At the same time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban visited the anti-terrorist center on the day the Ukrainian collection vehicles were seized. Later that day, security officers from this unit seized a car with currency and gold.
Subsequently, seven Oschadbank collectors, who had previously been detained in Hungary, were deported from the country and returned to Ukraine .
Meanwhile, the National Bank of Ukraine is working to return the cargo from the collection vehicles that were detained by Hungarian authorities. The regulator called the incident a provocation without legal grounds.
It is known that Oschadbank demands that Hungary return the collection vehicles and valuables that were detained on the territory of the country.
