Péter Magyar Signals Split Stance: Against Ukraine’s EU Bid, Open to Loan
Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar, whose party won the elections, opposed Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU but said he would not block a €90 billion loan for Kyiv.
European media are writing about this development.
Magyar stressed that Ukraine, as a country at war, cannot quickly gain membership in the European Union. According to him, all candidates should go through the same accession procedure.
The politician also backed the €90 billion loan deal reached in Brussels in December. It stipulates that Hungary may not participate in financing alongside the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
According to Magyar, the nation is struggling financially and cannot take on more debt.
“We received no EU funds and could not use them to develop the economy, so we cannot take out new loans,” he said.
At the same time, the politician noted that he sees no point in revising earlier agreements and advocates their implementation.
According to him, unlike Viktor Orban, he is ready to allow this decision, which could unblock funding for Ukraine.
Separately, Magyar stated that he is ready for dialogue with Ukraine and plans to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to improve relations.
He also emphasized that no one has the right to dictate to Ukraine the terms of ending the war and expressed hope that hostilities would cease.
Previously, we reported that Hungary has almost completely processed the results of the vote. According to the calculations, the opposition party “Tisa,” led by Peter Magyar, is leading by a wide margin, with 98.94% of the votes.
We remind you that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has lifted its recommendations for citizens to refrain from traveling to Hungary.
