“I asked a lot about Ukraine’s accession to NATO”: Stoltenberg recalled his first meeting with Poroshenko

Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recalled in his memoirs his first visit to Ukraine in 2015, during which he met with then-President Petro Poroshenko.

This was reported by “European Truth”.

According to the former employee, Poroshenko then talked a lot about how Russia falsifies history and justifies armed aggression against Ukraine.

In addition, the fifth president asked when Kyiv would be able to join the North Atlantic Alliance. Stoltenberg, in turn, named three conditions for accession: the country must be European, democratic, and capable of contributing to NATO’s security.

At the same time, he emphasized that the Alliance is already helping Ukraine, in particular, it is about implementing reforms, fighting corruption, and introducing NATO standards and doctrines.

“And it will also ensure Ukraine’s readiness for membership, as soon as the appropriate political conditions are created and we reach an agreement on your accession,” the former Secretary General added.

“However, Petro Poroshenko did not agree. “So when can we join?” he asked again. “I don’t know,” I replied. That was at least an honest answer,” the memoirs say.
