American actor Michael Douglas, who has been acting in films for almost 60 years, has announced his retirement. During his career, he received 2 Oscars.
He announced the end of his career at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Variety reports.
The actor said that he understood that he “had to stop”, so he has not acted in films since 2022.
“I’ve worked pretty hard for almost 60 years and I didn’t want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intention of coming back. I’m not retired because if something special happened I would come back, but otherwise I wouldn’t,” the actor said.
Douglas’ decision was also influenced by throat cancer. The actor said that “stage four cancer is not a holiday,” but he noted that he didn’t have much of a choice.
“I chose treatment, which included chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and I was lucky. The operation would have meant I wouldn’t be able to speak, I would have had part of my jaw removed, and that would have limited my options as an actor,” he added.
Douglas is best known for the films “Basic Instinct,” “Wall Street” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”
It should be noted that the actor began his career in the film “Cast a Giant Shadow”, which was released in 1966. His last film was the series “Franklin”, which was released in 2024.
Douglas also had a career as a producer from 1975 to 2020. At the time of his retirement, the actor was 80 years old.
