“I was slowly losing myself”: Svitolina announced her divorce

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has announced the end of her marriage to French tennis player Gael Monfils. The couple is divorcing after five years of marriage, but will continue to raise their daughter together.
The athlete announced this on her Instagram page.
Svitolina said that the war in Ukraine had a serious impact on her emotional state. According to the tennis player, her decision to suspend her performances last year was due to sleepless nights, doubts and the feeling that she was gradually losing herself.
Throughout this time, Monfils supported his wife. However, the athlete realized that in order to restore her inner balance, she needed to end the marriage.
“Over time, I realized that I needed to find my way back to myself and that I couldn’t do it within the confines of our marriage. It was the hardest truth I’ve ever had to face, and the hardest thing I’ve ever had to say to the person I love,” Svitolina wrote.
The tennis player noted that Monfils was understanding of her decision. She thanked him for his support during the most difficult moments and emphasized that they both made efforts to overcome difficulties.
Separately, Svitolina addressed the issue of raising their daughter Skye.
“Sky will always come first. Our marriage is ending, but our family is not. We will always be her parents, side by side, at every stage of her life,” the athlete emphasized.
She also asked not to look for those to blame for the divorce and to respect the family’s personal space.
Svitolina and Monfils married in July 2021. In October 2022, they had a daughter.
