Argentina has officially submitted the candidacy of the current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, for the post of UN Secretary-General for the period 2027-2031.

The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported this in a statement on November 26.

The Foreign Ministry noted that Grossi has more than 40 years of diplomatic experience, and his key achievements are related to “promoting international peace and security through open, effective and proactive governance and achieving demonstrable results.”

“His deep knowledge of the multilateral system, his ability to facilitate diplomatic dialogue, his proven track record in conflict situations and during serious international crises as an impartial and effective mediator, his technical and linguistic competence, and his commitment to the Charter of the United Nations make him an ideal candidate for the position.

Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno also responded to the decisions on social media, highlighting Grossi’s personal qualities and his important role in international security.

“Rafael Grossi is recognized by the international community for his extraordinary work as Director General of the IAEA, a position he has held for six years now. This demonstrates his exceptional leadership qualities in the face of serious crises affecting international peace and security. These qualities are essential to fulfilling the duties of Secretary-General in today’s international context… when the UN needs to consolidate reforms that will enhance its effectiveness and restore its international authority,” Kirno said.
