IAEA reports water supply disruptions at occupied Zaporizhia NPP

Due to hostilities in the temporarily occupied territory of Zaporizhia region, water supply disruptions have occurred at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant and in the surrounding areas. At the same time, there has been no shortage of water needed to cool the reactors at this time.
This was announced by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi.
According to him, damage to energy infrastructure due to attacks on Energodar and surrounding areas has led to water supply disruptions both in the city and in the occupied territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, where a significant part of the plant’s personnel lives.
At the same time, Grossi emphasized that water from underground wells, which is used to cool nuclear fuel in reactors, is currently sufficient, so there is no immediate threat to nuclear safety due to water shortages.
The IAEA chief also said that the agency’s experts at the ZNPP have had only limited access to tap water since July 18. In addition, the mission has not been able to visit the nearby emergency management center since December last year due to security risks.
In particular, Grossi emphasized that ensuring station workers have uninterrupted access to basic utilities is critically important for the safe operation of the nuclear facility.
“Nuclear power plant personnel must be protected at all times,” he stressed.
Previously, the IAEA reported increased military activity near all Ukrainian nuclear power plants , including the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP.
The agency has also repeatedly stated that its experts do not have full access to the facility, and that Russian occupation forces have placed military equipment, ammunition depots, and missile systems on the station’s territory.
