Immigration to the US put on hold: Trump introduces new restrictions

The administration of US President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended the processing of immigrant visa applications from candidates from around the world. The reason was training for employees of US embassies and consulates, during which they are to be taught to more carefully evaluate applicants.

This was reported by Reuters with reference to the US State Department.

A spokesperson for the department said that American diplomatic missions are launching a special staff training program. As a result, the schedule for processing immigrant visa applications will be changed.

The State Department explained that the training is intended to help consular officers identify applicants who are likely to become dependent on public assistance in the U.S. The department emphasized the need to ensure a “comprehensive and consistent” assessment of candidates.

The Financial Times reported that people who already had immigration visa interviews scheduled at US embassies and consulates began receiving letters postponing their appointments.

At the same time, the State Department has not yet disclosed how long the training will last and when exactly the previous application processing schedule will return.

The decision was another step by the Trump administration to tighten immigration controls. The White House has already taken steps to revoke visas and green cards, as well as strengthen checks on applicants based on their views and other circumstances.

The administration’s tough immigration policies have already faced legal challenges. Last week, a federal judge overturned a decision to suspend immigration visas for citizens of 75 countries, concluding that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had exceeded his legal authority.

Human rights organizations criticize Trump’s policy, saying it complicates not only illegal, but also legal immigration to the United States.
