The US administration has abandoned the idea of a forceful scenario regarding Greenland due to the risk of impeachment of President Donald Trump.
Reuters reports this.
According to the agency, since the beginning of January, Donald Trump and representatives of his team have increasingly mentioned the possibility of using force against Greenland, both publicly and in private conversations.
Such statements have raised concerns among lawmakers from both the Republican and Democratic parties, who fear that the president could initiate military action without congressional approval in a scenario similar to the previously discussed actions regarding Venezuela.
Lawmakers have conveyed their concerns to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior White House officials. As Reuters notes, Republicans have directly warned the administration that if the US invades Greenland, Congress could begin impeachment proceedings against the president.
After these signals, the White House reconsidered its approach to the Greenland issue and abandoned force options.
Earlier it was reported that US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte agreed on a framework agreement that provides for strengthening security in the Arctic with a focus on Greenland.
As a reminder, amid the US president’s statements regarding the seizure of Greenland, the Danish authorities are sending military equipment and defense forces to the island.
