In 2020, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó approached Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov with a request to assist the Social Democratic Party of Slovakia in its election victory.

This is stated in the published transcript by investigative journalist Szabolcs Pányi of the VSquare project.

According to the investigation, Szijjártó requested a meeting between then-Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini and Russian leaders in Moscow on the eve of the elections. He believed this could have influenced the outcome.

“It’s crucial for us that the coalition there survives. We hope for a victory for the Social Democrats, as they are the only rational force in Slovak politics that operates without foreign influence,” the transcript reads.

The article also notes that Szijjártó emphasized the importance of the Slovak National Party (SNS), led by Andrej Danko , getting into parliament to form a coalition with the Social Democrats.

Following Robert Fico’s resignation in 2018, Pellegrini, then leader of the Social Democratic Party, took over the government. He is currently the country’s president, and Fico once again leads the government and the political party.

Szijjártó, according to the investigation, also stated that an opposition victory would be a tragedy for Central European cooperation.
